Flood Season Wonderland - a time of plenty
10-11-2005
With the annual flooding of the Okavango river having transformed the waterways around Eagle Island Camp into a wildlife paradise, the past few months have brought exceptional sightings.
The annual cat fish run has started with a myriad fish feeding on other little fish spawned during the winter. And all aquatic animals come to feast on the abundance of fish including the crocodiles (which look pregnant, stocking up for leaner times ahead), little and giant egrets, yellow billed storks, grey herons and pelicans.
Guests at Eagle Island have also enjoyed sightings of rare birds such as the Lesser Moorhen, Pel's Fishing Owl and the much endangered Wattled Crane. However, Eagle Island does not only satisfy the birding enthusiast, catching the uncommon sight of lions swimming across the waterways, white rhino (which are currently being re-introduced back into the Okavango Delta), lion kills seen from the air on a helicopter game-viewing flight and herds of buffalo which number into the thousands.
